Let’s talk tummies!

In ballet we need gentle control over our tummy muscles, to support our lower backs and form an integral part of our ‘core’. Together with our side and lower back muscles this girdle of strength wrapping around our middle forms the central, stabilising hub of all our movement and balance.

Control over our tummies is tricky to master - but needs to become automatic - ‘the norm’. Rather than thinking of pulling the tummy ‘in’, think of holding it ‘to’ you - you can imagine a piece of string, attached to the inside of your tummy button, which is gently pulling out through your back and tethering your tummy button towards your spine.

Gently ‘squeeze your breakfast’/ lunch/ snack!

This feeling shouldn’t involve your chest, shoulders or breathing, which remain calm and unaffected by the effort happening lower down in your body.

Try thinking about this while you’re in the queue at the supermarket, or waiting for the kettle to boil!
