Standing tall in ballet!
In our ballet classes we aim to lengthen the spine and stand as tall as possible, to lift our weight off our hips and legs, improve our posture and ease movement.
I ask my dancers to try and leave the studio 2cm taller than when they came in!
But how do we do this, without lifting the chin or shoulders?
Think of the very top of your head being painted with bright blue paint. Now try to push the top of your head to the sky, to make a print of it on the ceiling. At the same time, feel your feet pushing down to the floor, but keep your shoulders easy. That’s the feeling you need to keep hold of, throughout your ballet class!
Your spine will lengthen (including your neck), you will feel lighter on your feet and you will encourage your tummy muscles to engage (see previous post).
You will be standing TALL!
